Do you mean that you generated the sawtooth to modulate the pwm carrier in another way ?

No, I mean I've used a 555 timer as a sawtooth oscillator in just this way to construct a Class D audio amp, I've also used it as part of a generic PWM power controller. I've used 555 timers for a -lot- of projects.
