(Branch manager to customer) "Potentiometer? What's a potentiometer?"
At least the guy was honest.
IMHO the best place for pseudo knowledege is listening to a sales guy trying to sell a PC to a naive customer in PC World.

What's bad is that once sales gets done promising that it can do the impossible and gets the sale, I have to show up and make the impossible actually happen.
I had that once, sales promised that the computer would deliver the 'optimum' solution to something akin to the Traveling Salesman problem. Fortunately the customer was sensible and accepted that the output would be as good as or better than a human could produce but delivered in minutes rather than days.

sounds about like when my father and i have a customer that draws their own design prints, for example, of an addition. with all the measurements not including any interior wall thickness. in other words, if you have a space of 12 feet available, and they want a wall in the center, with exactly 6 feet on each side of the wall.
The Japanese have an answer to that...paper walls.
It's a meter that tells how potent you are, right?

But what worries me is that they actually stock them... They're not just a 'click and collect' item.

In my experience referring to parts in the plural is risky in a Maplin store. They may have 2 of something but they are very unlikely to have 6.
