Powering GIGA using VIN

Hi all,

I hope you are all doing well.

My understanding is that I can power the GIGA using the VIN input. Is this true?
I've tried powering it using 12v and no love. I connected to VIN + GND (next to VIN)

Nothing blew up!!!

What am I missing?

Hi @kamputty . Powering the board using the VIN pin with 12V should work. The recommended range is 6-24V.

Hi @ksoderby,

Thanks for the prompt response.
I did that and no love!

Once I get access to my computer, I'll try again and strobe the attached leds to show signs of life.

My current test program updates external leds, that works when usb powered, but not vin powered.

@ksoderby,

I was looking at the documentation, especially the "power tree", and the way I read it is that the 5v0 headers only get power from usb, is this true? Makes sense to me because I'm powering my external leds via the 5v0 rail.

I believe that they would still get power from the regulator as there is no diode.

@kamputty that's strange. I just tested it out, using 12V as input voltage and the 5V is giving 5V. Maybe test with a different power supply and see if the issue persists?

[SOLVED]

Found issue...my power lead from the supply had a broken wire that would connect only at certain times! :astonished:

Replaced power leads and all is working 100%

Thanks for the assistance.

Hello, I have same problem. I power giga in VIN pin via 12V and 3A power supply but ON diod not light. When connect USB on PC ON diod light. I tested power supply with meter and looking good.

are you getting 5V on the 5v pin when powered via the VIN pin ?
