Programming an YwRobot Powered ESP-01 Using an FTDI232

Hi,

I have an ESP-01, an FTDI232 USB-to-Serial and a YwRobot breadboard power supply on v3.3.

Is there a way to power the ESP-01 via the breadboard, whilst using the FTDI programmer to flash the ESP-01?

I'm just unclear on the wiring as it appears I need a common ground across the ESP-01 and the FTDI232 for the flashing to work.. If I have the ESP powered via the YwRobot's v3.3 and GND, then connect the FTDI232's RX and TX only, I get connection errors..

warning: espcomm_sync failed
error: espcomm_open failed
error: espcomm_upload_mem failed

Thx.

You always have to have the grounds connected.

Why? Because electricity has to flow in a complete (closed) circuit.
