Project Ideas for improving newspaper department?

I am going to work for a newspaper department next year and would like to improve it somehow using ardunio. I was thinking a plotter device for the whiteboard. Or a IOT receipt printer that prints out tweets to the departments twitter account. Any other suggestion?

I would like to have an indicator that shows the hotness of the news today, sort of graph displayed on a monitor.
Every story gets a label between 10 (hot) and 1 (not) . The area under the graph is an indication of the impact of the news that day.
This helps the editor in chief to allocate resources or so.
(OK this is rather vague I know)

What to think about a timer for the editor in chief(??) so the people in the office can see when he is available again?

Birthday timer, counts down to the next birthday (party time).

Countdown timer for going to press.

An alert that "screams"(whatever) when the competitor [CNN] has breaking news.

A serendipity generator, that generates random words for which an investigation can be done. All editors fee it with subjects and when you don't know what to investigate just hit the button and it displays "birds in hospital".

A button pad with often used key phrase connected to laptop makes typing 10x faster.

A summarizing application.

A dynamic world clock that adapts to the time zone with the hottest news

A simple RED/YELLOW/GREEN indicator - will it rain the next hour?

An earthquake measurement device, to get local data (why not just a complete weather station)

A connection to the tsunami early warning system? (office in Hawai?)

enough for now?

Thanks that's plenty for now. I like the commonly used phrase button pad idea, and the serendipity generator. The generator in particular would be quite fun to make and use. If I start building anything I'll be sure to post it here. Thanks again.

And tell them you heard it on the Arduino Forum
