Robot follow person

I have been playing with the different Follow me car concepts, but it cheap IR sensors dont want to detect people on the right or left side unless they are real close to the sensor.

Here is the idea.

As a person approaches the robot and gets close 1 meter the robot will move toward the person. as the person moves to get away the robot will detect if it needs to make turns to stay with the person.
i use an ultrasonic to get the initial approach, but im trying to figure out which kind of sensors are best for following the persons movements

Well, I don’t think you can do it in a simple way. I would go by some image recognition path. If you still want to keep it simpler, take a look in the AMG8833 sensor (never used it myself tho).

There are two basic approaches to follow a person.

  1. have a beacon (radio or light) located on the person that allows distance and direction estimates

  2. use a sensor to identify and locate a person. The thermal camera mentioned above will work to detect a lightly clothed person at short range (2-4 m).

Both of the above are problems that can and should be solved before working on the robot, because "following" is the simplest part of the project.

how about a radar human presence detector like HLK-LD2450 24GHz Trajectory Sensor?
they're quite inexpensive.
