I am trying to run a stepper motor while polling 4 pins. I started out just turning the motor without a library and I could do that. Then I tried polling 1 pin while running the motor and nothing would run. I have been switching back and forth between Arduino and Microchip PIC having the same results from both. I am now totally confused. I have been working on this for 2 days and am exhausted. Any advice will be appreciated.

You have provided no information that we can use to help you. All that we can do is guess as to your hardware and what you want to do with it. That guessing game is never productive.
Please read the forum guidelines. That page will tell you what sort of information that will make it possible for us to give informed assistance.
Use the IDE autoformat tool (ctrl-t or Tools, Auto format) before posting code in a code block.
Please post a wiring diagram. Written descriptions are always more ambiguous than a drawing. Hand drawn, photographed and posted is fine. Include all pin names/numbers, components, their part numbers and/or values and power supplies.
We, especially, need to know what stepper motor, stepper driver and power supply that you have. We would like to see data sheets, manuals or technical documentation of the component specifications.
