What are the mechanical/optical/electronic limitation?

The plastic cover is actually a lens. Unless you know what you are doing, you should use the one specified in the datasheet.
I have similar looking ones and the PCB is adjustable allowing range adjustment. That is the way it is labeled.
You have similar sensors? grove modules? the product I sent?
I but a bunch from MPJA (Marlin P Jones Associates) about 10 years ago, they work great. I have no idea what grove is selling.
