Searching for IMU or Accelerometer with a distance from Arduino

I need to attach a sensor to an arduino to sense the speed of a childrens swing. However I would like to attach the sensor as far as possible from the arduino so that I can only attach the sensor on the swing seat rather than the whole set. The distance will be about 4-5 meters , 13-16 feet.

I have a current setup with MPU6050 however since this is i2c it doesnt seem advisable to be far from the arduino.

What would be a good sensor, imu, accelerometer for this purpose?

How about putting the sensor and the MCU on the swing seat and have the MCU transmit the stuff to the other thing?

Much easier to use a small Nano or Micro along with your sensor to the swing and just run a longer power cord.

Do you want this attached to a PC to receive the values? Store the values on an SD card?

No I will use the values on the spot. I would love to use a wireless solution but im scared of performance and the difficulty setting up. I will be using Mega 2560 pro mini board so i guess ideal is to attach to seat the entire setup.

Care to elaborate what the project is going to be? How are you using the values "on the spot" for example? If you are using them immediately, why the need for wireless? Connected to what?

I will be connecting them to led lighting, sense the speed of the swing and output that into the leds. Therefore i preferred the arduino to be close to power source so that I can power both lights and arduino from the same location outside the swing.

Hang on!

Do a better job of describing exactly where the lighting and the controller and the power supply will be with respect to the swing?

The power supply is off the swing set about a meter. The leds are in and around the swing including the swing seat . from power supply I have two options:

  1. Give power to led strips from that point, as far as i understand I can power the LED's from the other end related to their signal-in point.

And also drag a cable from 5v 20a adaptor powersource to the swing seat. Setup controller, imu sensor there. And give power to controller connected to imu sensor. And also give signal in to LED lights.

  1. Give power to arduino controller off the swing. Drag a cable from controller to swing where only the imu sensor lies on seat. Power entire setup off the swing, which so far, seems not advisable.

I'd stick a MCU on the swing with a battery and have the MCU send its data to another MCU located otherwhere. The otherwhere MCU can be used to process the swing data.

I hate to involve a battery because this will be in Moscow and weather might be -25 degree celcius -13F . .. I was hoping that it was possible for MP9250 or other imu's to be at a distance of 2-3 meters from the mcu if not i2c than using spi ....

LiPo4's.

My weather station, located in Idaho, is powered by LiFePo4's. The batteries experience life below 0 on numerous occasions.

LiFePo4's can come in small packages.

And someone will be on the swing in this weather? :astonished:
