Selecting order of search results

Is it possible to change the order of the results returned by a forum search?

Results are ordered by relevance, however this can be meaningless for many searches - the percentage occurrence of the search term seems to be what is used but this does not necessarily indicate relevance.
(Posts with a few words surrounding a search term is classified as more relevant than a detailed explanation).

Is there a way to change the order of results to display in date order.

Perhaps a link in the search box or on the top of the search results page would make it easier to find.
