Hint:
A great tool for checking if an oscillation is present is to feed the oscillator output to a CMOS buffer. There are some single gate buffers available.
You can monitor the buffer output without the loading problems of your scope probe.
However, you need to make up this scope tool ahead of time, before it is required; put the buffer in a plastic case something like this.
