Sim900 datasheet and maximum GPIO voltage

Hi all - In all the references to the use of the Sim900 Gsm/GPRS shield, I don't see any warnings about exceeding the GPIO maximum voltage when interfaced to Arduino boards, but the data sheet shows the following tolerances fr the GPIO's and other pins:

I didn't see any protection on the schematic.
Any thoughts?
