I have noticed that the solution checkbox is perhaps not used to its fullest potential. For example,
OP selects their own reply, e.g., "Hey, that works, thanks!" as the solution.
OP selects the last piece of the puzzle as the solution, e.g., someone provides the solution in the form of an algorithm, someone else mentions that a semicolon is missing and the latter post is selected as the solution.
No post is selected as the solution even though the issue is solved.
While case 3 potentially wastes the time of helpers, case 1 and 2 potentially waste time of people trying to find a solution to a similar problem.
A number of helpers are trying to steer people in the right direction, I have tried this myself by posting the following paragraph once an issue is solved
but this does not have the desired effect, it only seems to amplify cases 1 and 2 (especially 1).
Would it be an idea to address these issues in the forum interface? For example:
A pop up with additional instructions could appear when a solution is selected.
When someone selects one of their own posts as the solution, perhaps a warning can be shown.
If a topic has no solution, OP could receive a reminder after a few days of inactivity.
I would definitely second that. Having a proper solution will help a lot down the road.
When you google Arduino related questions, this forum's post often pop up.
Marking only one post as a solution is often not the correct answer either, since several posts may have contributed to the overall solution, and posters build on previous posts.
It would be really helpful if the OP did a brief summary and said why something was a solution. I don't think this is very likely, given that many posts are never marked as solved. Perhaps the most frequent poster to the thread could also receive a reminder, but one that they should not feel obliged to reply to.
Yours' is a good idea. Perhaps: The next time an OP signs-in, a "was your post resolved? Y/N" captcha check box (similarly annoying to the annoying "cookies" annoyance).
OK here is a perfect example.
Despite having provided the help in what could be wrong in my posts #6 last paragraph and post #8 first paragraph. He claimed the credit for the solution. I did get a thanks though. Matrix text weirdly wiggling
