Speed controller for hoverboard wheels?

Just a quick one but I managed to get hold of some old hoverboard wheels (the ones with the inbuilt brushless motor) for extremely cheap with the intention of making a robot or just plain toying with them and I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for a speed controller for them?

I've seen this guy using what appears to be a standard rc model ESC ...
ESC controlled hoverboard wheel

However I tried this with one of my own Turnigy ESCs and I can't reach even half the max speed he does and the motor seems to stall at over half throttle.

Any ideas on why this might be happening or if there is something I can modify in the ESC setup to fix this?

Cheers

Most hoverboards include remote that can control the speed of that hoverboard. If it does not have remote, you can control the speed by your legs. If you press the board in the forward direction, it will go fast. And, if you stop lean forward, it will stop automatically. I share you a few helpful hoverboard resources below.

Hoverboard ---- wheels.

And "action figures" aren't dolls.
