starting out?

hi all, my name is rik i have been into software programming for a long time, and want to get started in the embedded stuff. my problem and question is there are so many kits out there that i have completely confused myself on what one i wanted!? Special Edition Arduino Uno R3 SMD is the last board (kit) i was looking into. i have exp with many languages C/C++, python, java etc. i read some posts of recommendations made to others but they were kinda dated. can anyone tell me a nice kit, kindof a do it all type thing? thank you for your time

Without knowing what you want to do with it, there are too many to choose.

Hey!

I've just ordered my Starter Kit. I think is the way to go because from there you can decide what is more interesting for you.

I don't have too much experience in programming per se, however I do have mathematical skills that I usually use in spreadsheet modeling.

My quest was a little wider that yours because I was even considering other DIY platforms like Raspberry Pi that does comes with a native Linux distro (if you want): Raspberian that is based on Debian, same base of Ubuntu.

At the end I liked more Arduino because it´s platform goes beyond a simple program, you can actually project your code to physical project like a small robot arm.

I'm an Ubuntu user since quite a time, and I love it. If you look around the product list you will find Arduino Yún that supports OpenWrt (Linux) and could be easily your first choice since you already know Python.

Actually, that was my first choice but then I thought that I should do baby steps into the Arduino world by getting the Starter Kit.

After I dominate this first stage, for sure I'm going for the Yún.

Good luck!
