Steampunk character costume robotics help

Hi, okay so I'm making preparations for a costume of my Yena creature Okto http://axemnas.deviantart.com/art/Okto-my-steampunk-Yena-437898986![](http://axemnas.deviantart.com/art/Okto-my-steampunk-Yena-437898986) Sorry the picture doesn't show all his robotics I'm still sketching and at the moment I'm just planning and buying a few supplies off and on when I can afford it before I start construction.
For the robotic side of his face I want to make it look as authentic as possible so I'm taking a clock apart for some gears.I want to make the gears on his forehead move. In addition to that on his shoulder I want to do something similar with the gears and possibly have a hand crank type nob that could turn it on and off. My third thing I want to do is make a set of moving ears. Maybe not as advanced as the ones that run on a EEG but, I'd like to possibly make them sound activated or motion sensitive or something like that I'm still trying to figure out what all I'm planning to do.
The last thing I'm still debating on is I'm putting in some LEDs in the eye and possibly the claws and I'm thinking about making them where they alternate color either by sound or just as a patter
Someone on instructables told me a servo and getting a arduino would help me accomplish what I want to do. I'm about as much of a beginner as you can get when it comes to robotics so I'd love any help you can give me. What would be a good one board for this?
Thanks

Tom...looks like an interesting project...
