The jumper on the motor Shield doesn't work

My problem is that despite the fact that I installed the jumper on the motor shield my arduino is not powered, unless I plug it in USB.

Shield: L293D Based Arduino Motor Shield

(As a new user I can't upload 2 pictures. When I unplug the blue usb cable the wheels stop turning immediately. Even when I'm pressing the reset button)

"If you would like to have a single DC power supply for the Arduino and motors, simply
plug it into the DC jack on the Arduino or the 2-pin PWR_EXT block on the shield.
Place the power jumper on the motor shield. "

This is exactly what I did. I powered the PWR_EXT block with 6 volt via batteries (4*1,5 in series) and placed the power jumper on the motor shield. However the moment I unplug the usb drive the wheels stop completely. Probably because my normal arduino board is not powered and can't control them anymore
