TP4056 charger - more current idea

Hi,

I have a project that has a temporary peak current draw more than these wonderful but somewhat limited TP4056 protected charger units can handle. I think I have a solution, but I'd appreciate some feedback as this is all fairly new to me and I'm far too poor to just smoke components without asking for advice first.

Apologies for the attached MS Paint rendition, but is this "schematic" feasible?

I did originally think to skip the PNP and use a P-channel mosfet, but I don't have any. This is the best I could come up with using components I have*

I appreciate that given the voltage range of the battery, the mosfet gate will never see 5v, but at a 2.5v threshold it should always be on if there is sufficient battery voltage. I can accept the 10mV difference between the DW01 cutoff voltage and the mosfet threshold and at a modest 250mA load I don't think I'll lose too much power to the mosfet's heatsink. Will I?

  • I spent nearly three hours staring at harvested boards from "thrown away" electronics gear, and googling datasheets for the specs. The only P-channels I have won't work anywhere near 4v on the gate.
