Hello all,
I am trying to send a bitmap image from an SD card to an external TFT display using Arduino Uno. Here's the display driver: RA8875 Driver Board for 40-pin TFT Touch Displays - 800x480 Max : ID 1590 : $39.95 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits. I followed this guide: Arduino Code | RA8875 Touch Display Driver Board | Adafruit Learning System.
The first example programs run successfully ('buildtest' and 'textmode', as suggested in the guide), so I know that my display is working and wired correctly. However, when I try the 'ra8875_bitmap' example code, the display fails to initialize. Specifically, it reaches line 36 and gets stuck in the while loop:
/* Initialize the display using 'RA8875_480x80', 'RA8875_480x128', 'RA8875_480x272' or 'RA8875_800x480' */
if (!tft.begin(RA8875_800x480)) {
Serial.println("RA8875 Not Found!");
while (1);
}
The output from the serial monitor is:
initialization done.
RA8875 start
255
RA8875 Not Found!
When I tried to run the 'buildtest' code again, it failed to run as long as I had the SD card reader connected. Once I disconnected the SD card reader, it ran successfully. So, the SD card reader seems to be disrupting the TFT display somehow.
When I run the 'ra8875_bitmap' code with the SD card reader disconnected, the program fails on line 26 after outputting:
initialization failed!
I can also run the 'ra8875_bitmap' code with no issue if I disconnect the SD card reader and comment out everything related to the SD card reader.
From my understanding, both of these devices use the hardware SPI. I know I can use software SPI (maybe?), but I don't know how to do that. I spotted a line in the Adafruit guide about tri-state something, but I'm not sure what that means. Does anyone have any insight here?
Always post ALL the code. Snippets aren't much help, if the problem (as usual) is in the missing part.
Also post a wiring diagram (photo of a hand drawn diagram is preferred, with all pins and connections clearly labeled). You may have a wiring conflict.

No obvious conflicts with the wiring.
You may be running out of memory. The SD card takes 1/4 of it, TFT displays can take another 1/2, etc.
Check whether that display requires a memory buffer on an Uno, and how large it is.
Edit: This is the problem, prominently announced on the Adafruit product page.
Please note! The RA8875 does not tri-state the MISO pin, it should not share that pin with any other SPI device (including an SD card reader) without the use of a 74HC125 or similar
