This started two days ago, and continues. I'm running Firefox 151.0.2 on Windows 10. When I arrive at the forum, it tells me I have one unread post. That's what shows in both "Unread" fields, and my icon at the upper right has a green "1" on it.
So I click on the Unread icon, and it immediately takes me to the big check mark telling me I've read all the new posts. But the green "1" is still on my icon, and in fact I do have one unread post. It shouldn't have taken me to the checkmark.
This may well be a Firefox problem because I think I did the latest update at about the time this started. But I'm not sure, and have no way to revert that update.
Anyway, I just wanted to report the problem in case it's a forum issue.
This problem also started for me two days ago. Win11 Firefox.
Every time I open the forum site it tells me I've got 2 unread messages. Clicking on unread shows no unread messages and the count changes to 0.
No problems here (except for the obvious one where the upper unread field does not update correctly).
Win11 / Firefox 151.0.2.
I suspect that one reason why Unread or New might indicate that there is something might be that there was either a spam topic / post or a topic / post was deleted.
No, it's all posts, including the ones in this thread.
Well, coming back to the forum again just now, I refreshed the main page before clicking on Unread, and it worked properly.
Anyway, if this is happening on Edge too, then it's a forum problem.
Edit: One other thing to watch for. I'm not sure about this, but I think when it screws up, the upper Unread counter is also cleared. In other words, this time the Unreads were actually shown to me properly, and the upper Unread still shows "1". But I think when it aborts showing me the unreads, the upper Unread is completely removed. Maybe someone else can remember to notice if this is true for them.
Not sure if I noticed the same thing as you, but just now it showed a count of 3 for unread. So I clicked on it and there was 1 real unread (from this thread) plus the 'phantom' 2 unreads I've had for a couple of days. Having clicked on the genuine unread to read it, it's now gone back to showing 1 unread (the problem it's had for ages). I'm going to close the forum tab after posting this and open it again to see if it's cleared the 2 phantom unreads.

I also had 3 notifications. I did read one via notifications and went back to the main page. The above image still applied (4 unread); should have been 3.
Next I clicked on the bottom Unread (4) and it showed the correct Unread (3) as well as 3 unread topics; no ghosts.
Next I booted into Manjaro Linux, visited forum.arduino.cc using Firefox (150.0.3) and it still showed an unread counter of 4 on the main page and going to the unread topics shows only 3.
So same behaviour.
A new variant for me this morning. Everything said I had Unread in two threads, but when I clicked on Unread, it only showed me one of them. After reading that one, I got the big check mark. The only indication that I had another thread to look at was a green "1" on my icon. Turned out the missing thread was this thread, which as far as I can tell includes no deleted posts.
I wonder if someone at the head end is testing things. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't - in increasingly odd ways.
Anyway, if it says I have two Unreads, but when I click on Unread it only shows me one, that's not a Firefox problem. Also, it appears that the green indicator on my notifications icon at the upper right always has the corrent number of Unreads, even if the board doesn't want to show them to me.

Same thing happened with missing Avatars about two years ago.
Took them months to fix.
I haven't noticed anything different though. Same behaviour as the last 3-4 years.
Just counter not cleared after reading all the unread posts, nothing else.
Yes, Dismiss All seems to have permanently got rid of the two phantom unreads for me. There was no Dismiss All option when the only unreads were the 2 phantom ones.
