Trying to get DFplayer mini to work

So I seem totally unable to get anything to work so ive gone back to the absolute basics to try and wire each component in one by one.

I honestly feel ready to throw away this hobby, any help to save my sanity is apprecaited!

I have a breadboard power suppl.. I have set the jumper to 5v as circled in red. The is connected to a 5v power source.

I have a dfplayer wired into the power supply and the speaker wired into the dfplayer.

On the SD card which is formatted to fat32 is a 001.mp3.

sometimes when i turn on the power i hear crackles at best. definitely

no sound.

what am i doing wrong please? this should be simple

Where does the Arduino come into this? Try posting a schematic, the pinout of the player is not readable and I do not have one like that.

ive removed the arduino entirely. as I dont seem to be able to get it to work with i was trying to just add each component one by one until i get a circuit that works.
download

that is the pins for the DFPlayer.

The only thing I can think is that i originally connected the DFPlayer to a 9v power supply.. so maybe ive just broken it

I do not know which player you have. Not put that into a schematic, there is no coloration between your two pictures.Since there is more then one player, post a link to the technical information on the one you have, same as or similar to does not count.

i believe this is the data sheet but im not certain/

it was purchased from here...

That's a real good possibility

Measure that 5V. Those "all in one kit" breadboard power supplies have a high rate of failure, it seems. Mine did and I don't recall stressing it or anything.

At least, that's where I'd start looking.

On this page, search for "I/O MODE"

  • Connect 3W speaker to SPK_1 and SPK_2 (NOT the 8ohm speaker from your boombox)
  • Connect a JUMPER wire to GROUND
  • Connect GND to your power supply ground
  • Connect VCC to your power supply +v
  • Verify SD card is formatted FAT16 or FAT32
  • Verify audio is MP3, less than 48kHz
  • Touch (short press) the jumper wire to IO_1 for NEXT file
  • Touch (short press) the jumper wire to IO_2 for PREV file
  • HOLD (long press) the jumper wire on IO_1 to DECREASE volume
  • HOLD (long press) the jumper wire on IO_2 to INCREASE volume

Thanks for the info, I agree that is the correct data sheet. Try this link, it is a tutorial on how to use it. Let us know how you do.

I agree with @hallowed31. Check to see that your power supply is actually outputting 5V and that it is reaching your DF player.

Next I would suggest what @xfpd said. Verify that your SD card is formatted with FAT32, not ExFAT. Then connect a jumper wire to ground and use it to touch other pins to skip track or play/pause or whatever.

Also, just for a sanity check, try grounding both ground pins on the DFPlayer. From your diagram, it looks like you didn't ground pin 10.

Hope this helps!

You’re making it hard to help you! First, draw a schematic - a diagram showing exactly what device(s) you are using and the wires connecting each pin.

Then tell us if you have tested your Player module using the detailed advice already given. If that fails, as I too suspect, then replace it, carefully, with another, and test that.
