Hi I am using the ultrasonic sensor to detect the existence of the stairs
so it has to be tilted about 30 degrees
but the readings are incorrect when it's tilted
Presumably the signal is bouncing off at an angle if the sent Signal is at 30 deg to the stairs , so you will get a odd measurement.
Yea, what hammy wrote.
Remember, a ultra sonic. like a sr04, has a 15 degree output cone. Tilt that output cone, bounce em off a set of stairs and multi-path reflections.
A LIDAR is a bit better with a cone of 2 degrees but is limited with how close or short of a distance it can read. Light thingies and all being so fast, a few centimeters of travel is going to hard to measure.
so it has to be tilted about 30 degrees
Why?
Most stairs have vertical (or very nearly so) risers.

what do you mean ?

That the risers are vertical, not at 30 degrees. Ultrasound reflects best at right angles to a surface
