Underwater depth sensing and ranging!

Dear all,

I am trying to build something to map the earth's surface of local deep lakes in the area. So I am looking for very deep water penetration. What type of sensor module would you recommend for me, please? Also, I believe in extreme engineering and would like to know what is the best tech out there right now.

Sonar works for a few hundred meters, much further with very high transmission power, but temperature effects and thermoclines can be a problem.

Pressure sensors designed for submersion work at any depth. Pressure is directly proportional to depth.

Use a tube having a pressure sensor in one end, air tight. Pull the other end down to the bottom using a heavy weight. Measure the pressure....

Not extreme engineering, whatever that is, but a weight and a line worked for a few thousand years. With a motor, encoder, and uC, could work again. Steam punk.

Hi, @eintisar
Welcome to the forum.

How deep?
Can you please tell us your electronics, programming, arduino, hardware experience?

Thanks.. Tom.. :grinning: :+1: :coffee: :australia:

You need to research current and past techniques to see what was used and what is/was available . Then work out your approach
