Upload to Nano fails: "stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding"

I'm using a new Arduino Nano and have a problem uploading via USB.

Upload via AVRisp MK2 no problems. When I upload via USB I have problems (see last post).

I have done a bootloader update via AVRisp MK2 from ARDUINO IDE. But USB upload does not work :frowning:

Hi @rolfdegen.

When you do that, it erases the bootloader. The "stk500_recv(): programmer is not responding" error message you encountered while trying to upload via USB is what we expect to see when you attempt to upload to a board that doesn't have a bootloader (though there are also several other potential causes of this generic error message).

So if you perform this sequence:

  1. Perform "Burn Bootloader" operation.
  2. Perform "Upload Using Programmer" operation.
  3. Attempt upload via USB.

Then it is expected that the upload will fail at step (3).

But if you instead perform this sequence:

  1. Perform "Burn Bootloader" operation.
  2. Attempt upload via USB.

Then we would expect the upload at step (2) to be successful.

So please try burning the bootloader again to make sure it is present on the board, then try uploading via USB once more. Hopefully it will be successful this time.

Ok. I saw that the baud rate for COM13 is overwritten from upload. Can you please reduce the baud rate for uplade in Arduino IDE !? I will try it.

This indicates that you have selected the 328P under tools/processor.

You either bought a very old original Nano or a clone. Try the 328P (old bootloader) option; if that fails, try the 168 option. And if that fails please provide sharp photos of the top and bottom of the boar so we can read the print on the ICs.

Is your board flashing the normal blink sequence (1 second on, one second off)?

No. Only LED "Pow" is constantly lit. The other LEDs are off

In that case it sounds like there is no bootloader. If there is no "normal" blink pattern the 328P was either not programmed at the factory or is faulty.

Hello. I programmed the Arduino Nano via USB. First I programmed the Nano via AVRISP MK2 (COM3) with the sketch for UPDI programmer "jtag2updi-master". Then I removed the AVRISP MK2. I connected the Nano to the ATtiny412 as shown in the circuit diagram and connected the Nano to a USB2.0 port on my PC (not a USB hub). Then I changed the setting for programmer to "jtag2updi" and set COM13 and set 10MHz clock for ATtiny. Next I loaded a sketch (Blink) and transferred it to the ATtiny via "Upload using Programmer". It worked without any errors. LED Rx and LED Tx from Nono lights during upload.
