USB cable / plug shield connection?

Hi,

Does anybody know where the USB cable shield is supposed to be connected to at each end?
In some devices it is connected to system (digital) ground either directly or through a capacitor or through a varistor. In other cases it has been left disconnected.

My application is a small bench power supply which also has a couple of 5V USB outlets.

Thanks for the info but that doesn't say anything about the shield...
