use an Arduino to build a Garage Parking Assistant

first of all i am pretty new to Arduino.cc - my name is Apollodriver - and i live in Europe.

i am interested in doing the first steps with Arduino:

How could we use an Arduino to build a Garage Parking Assistant

background: many people still have very small garages - and know the frustration of parking a
little bit too far in or a little too far out and not being able to walk around the vehicle.

i want to achieve a solution with a Arduino:

Goal: a electronic device to gauge the distance i need to drive a car in?
Are there any ideas that takes me into the project?

i want to use Use an Arduino to achieve that -

eg with and PING))) Ultrasonic Sensor that helps me that we can drive the always be savely into the Garage-

Are there allready any aproaches existing.

The 'ping' idea seems ok for the task.
Add a coupe of colored lights to mark distance.

White(green) for distance 40..60 cm? .. Red light 0..40cm??
12V bulbs controlles via MOSFETs


or.. a 2" x 2" bolted to the floor..?

Or the old tennis ball on a string trick: when it touches the windscreen, stop. And it can be adjusted side to side too, to line up with driver's nose.
