Using a computer display with Arduino

Hey guys,

Not sure if this a noob question, but I am quite new to the Arduino system. I have done a bunch of research and don't seem to be able to find what I'm looking for.

Is it possible to use an external computer lcd monitor (that is, a big screen) to display visuals that are triggered by Arduino? If so, how can I go about doing it? Also, is this possible to do in color rather than b/w?

Additionally, what file formats are accepted as far as visuals? I would like to have animation occur. Is this best to upload as a .gif, or mpg, or as individual files? What programming is involved to make this happen?

Please note that I have an RFID sensor hooked up to my rig right now, and I plan to use RFID cards to trigger different visuals on the screen.

Thanks so much for your help!
