Using of Capacitive Proximity Sensor

Hello! I was wondering how does the Capacitive Proximity Sensor works and how does this sense a non-metallic object specially the Plastics?

Wow thank you, this information is super useful, but if I may ask, since I tried using the Capacitive Sensor LJC8A3 H-Z/BY which is its operation is Normally Open by the way, Im trying to detect the Glass and Plastic but no luck on this Sensor. Since the only thing that it detects is Most likely Metal objects. Also loooking at its sensor value even if it is not used the value of the sensor is not stable. Thank you again for the info!

Hi,

Do you mean;
LJC18A3 H-Z/BY

It should detect your finger/body since you have capacity for an electrical field. Insulators don't. Capacitive sensing sees through insulators.

Hey! A capacitive proximity sensor detects objects by measuring changes in the surrounding electric field. It creates an electrostatic field, and when a non-metallic object like plastic enters, it alters the field’s capacitance. Since plastics have a higher dielectric constant than air, the sensor picks up this change and registers the object. That’s why capacitive sensors can detect not just metals but also materials like glass, wood, and liquids. Are you working on a specific project with these sensors?

Sorry for the typo, yeah exactly the LJC18A3 H-Z/BY
