Virtual mapping

I was working on a project that is a mobile robot run by arduino. Now the next step is to create a virtual map so that i can put an obstacle virtually and then make the robot vehicle avoid the virtual obstacle and reach its destination. So the map may be created in a matrix form where element 1 can be for 'obstacle' and element 0 can be for 'no obstacle'. Anyone has any idea how to implement this???

Bitmap.

How will the robot know its location on the map?

Do it like the games. The robot is ALWAYS in the middle of the map. The map moves, not the robot.

That approach just changes the problem to "where is the obstacle on the map".
