Whats the best distance measuring sensor that ignores light vegetation?

I basically need to know the distance to the ground, but maybe in locations where there is long grass that i want to ignore.

It doesn't matter if it picks up thick hatched grass.

Need something that can see upto 80-100cm.

But mainly just need to know what type i should be experimenting with.

LIDAR comes to mind.

Lidar would probably be the best bet but expensive, and maybe some of the new radar types but range seems too close for it to work or be accurate.

Any reason a meter stick will not do the job?

I dont want to get out of the car. Am lazy.

Too lazy to open the window and put the stick out?

Any idea how long it will take you to write a working arduino program to do the measurement for you? (Including putting it in a box and fixing the box to your car with duct tape and removing the duct tape glue left after removing the box...)

So, it has to be a noncontact measurement?
