Why to uses diode across voltage regulator

Can some one tell me what is the purpose of D1 and D2

When the power input is removed and the capacitor C1 (large value) is charged, it might feed current back thru the regulator output damaging it.

The diode D1 prevents this.

Looks like D2 is used to aid in C2 discharge, also, probably needed to stabilize the output voltage.

From the datasheet at ti.com:
"D2: Protection diode D2 is recommended if CADJ is used. The diode provides a low-impedance discharge path to prevent the capacitor from discharging into the output of the regulator (see Protection Diodes)."
