First off, if I have posted in the wrong spot, don't shoot me, and tell me the correct place to post this message.
Haven't been on here in a long time. As I gotten older, I decided to give these devices another crack.
My old windows 7 died, and I replaced it with a machine that's running windows 11.
For the life of me, I can't get that damn computer to upload to the nano.
I have the correct port, in my case, it's COM5
It's USB to serial using CH340 driver.
I can see the nano. When I ask IDE 2.3.1 to get board info, the IDE returns with an 'unknown board (it's a chinese clone) and some other data. But IT SEES the board.
When I try to upload, the IDE times out. Unable to upload and quits.
Now, if I take the same cable, the same Nano and connect it to my windows 10 laptop, no issues at all uploading.
I tried using AI to troubleshoot the issues, but that hasn't resulted in any success.
Is there a special chant or incense that I must burn to get this stupid window 11 computer to upload to my nano?
I was working on the problem later today, it's too hot to do much of anything outside, and found out something rather odd. I had purchased some new Ardunio Nano boards from Amazon. I got three and these have what looks like gold tape on the top of the USB connector. Well don't you know, those appeared to take an upload without issue, however, the ones without the gold tape won't upload. Is there a difference? Must be. My windows 10 laptop will upload to either one without issue. The quest continues...
I suspect its purpose is to provide a surface for the vacuum pickups on the actuator of the pick-and-place machine manufacturers use to automatically place the component on the PCB during assembly of the board. Or maybe it is to shield the plastic internal components from the heat of the reflow oven used to solder the board?
The tape serves no purpose after manufacturing, but manufacturers don't go to the effort to remove it.
I thought it was Kapton tape, too. But you can't pick it off even with a razor blade. For whatever reason why it's there or what it even is, those Chinese Nano clones appear to let Windows 11 upload to them.
The USB to serial port on the windows 10 machine is the CH340 with driver 3.9.2024.9. I'll have to check what the windows 11 machine driver build number is. I know it's the same CH340. AI told me that the Win11 CH340 is newer and that's what's causing the problem with the clone Nanos because those boards use a older chip, and that the new drivers won't talk to the computer.
I have older clone Nanos (few years old) that work without problems on Win11; same version driver as your Win10 system uses. Some clones use reject / fake CH340 ICs.
Drivers are installed on the PC, not on the board; unlikely that they will not talk to the PC
These cloned boards can be more trouble than they're worth.
Not all, by any means. Elegoo or Geekcreit haven't caused me problems in the past.
It's just a personal thing, but I like to buy the Arduino brand as it supports the project and there's a lot of support.
If a clone doesn't work, it can be time consuming, and you can never be sure what you are getting.
That is indeed odd. The Kapton tape I have encountered on various components was always easily removable. Since Kapton tape is also used in permanent applications (e.g., insulating the terminals on LiPo batteries), I would guess that maybe it is available with multiple adhesive types. Maybe they happened to select tape with a permanent adhesive for those parts?
Anyway, this is a bit tangential (though interesting). Did you ever try what @sterretje suggested in post #2:

This procedure is not intended to solve the problem. The purpose is to gather more information.
Please do this:
Select File > Preferences... (or Arduino IDE > Settings... for macOS users) from the Arduino IDE menus.
The "Preferences" dialog will open.
Uncheck the box next to Show verbose output during: β compile in the "Preferences" dialog.
Check the box next to Show verbose output during: β upload.
Click the "OK" button.
The "Preferences" dialog will close.
Attempt an upload, as you did before.
Wait for the upload to fail.
You will see an "Upload error: ..." notification at the bottom right corner of the Arduino IDE window. Click the "COPY ERROR MESSAGES" button on that notification.
Open a reply here on this forum topic by clicking the "Reply" button.

I sure don't mind getting the real McCoy either, but I'm not sure where to purchase them. I tried Amazon, and I couldn't find anything other than the Chinese clones.
I'll get that info uploaded. The win 11 machine is in the basement office, and I'm upstairs on a mac, so I'll have to copy the error, transfer it to a thumb drive and then upload it into this forum. No, the computers are not on a network. The basement computer has no email client on it. Give me a day or so to the the file moved.
Despite its name, The Pi Hut also carry Arduino products as do many of the major electronics suppliers like CPC Farnell, RS Components, Mouser, Digikey etc. In the UK, smaller outlets like Switch Electronics also carry Arduino products. In the USA there is also RobotShop. Sparkfun, Adafruit and Elegoo also carry reputable alternatives.
Note that these distributors may also sell boards from other manufacturers. However, if you purchase an Arduino brand product from them, you can have confidence that you will receive a genuine Arduino.
Not to take the subject off topic, but I had an issue with adafruit. I was going to order a RTC. It was $13 and change. It weighed 2.2 grams. When I went to pay for the item, the shipping was nearly $26βfor a 2.2 gram item. I sent a email to them, they said that was the correct charge. I canceled the order after they said I could get the RTC from mouser. That's what I did.
As someone who used to be in a business that involved shipping many thousands of packages, I am very much annoyed when I am charged an unreasonably high shipping fee. There can definitely be complicating factors in the case of international shipments though. Some companies are very well set up for efficient fulfillment anywhere in the world, while others can accomplish it only by less cost effective means.
Funny enough, I had almost the opposite experience with Adafruit. Back in the days when I was just a hobbyist with Arduino, I purchased a dozen "Thermocouple Amplifier MAX31855 breakout board" from Adafruit's website. The website wanted to charge me a shipping cost far above what I knew it would cost to make the combined shipment. I contacted customer service and they promptly adjusted the shipping to a fair price.
I actually had another experience with that same order, which gave me even more of a positive impression of their customer support. Many months or years after making that order, Adafruit contacted me to notify me that there had been a manufacturing error on the chip manufacturer Maxim's part (no fault of Adafruit), which resulted in inaccurate readings from certain batches of the chips. I verified that some of the modules I had purchased were from the affected batch and they sent me replacements.
As a hobbyist not able to dedicate much money to supplies, I was also buying a lot of suspiciously cheap stuff from random sellers on eBay and AliExpress at that time. I guarantee none of them would ever have voluntarily contacted me about a defect.
