12V 60W DC adapter to run 4 motor

Hi Guys,
Last time I fried my Arduino Uno. I don't want to repeat it as I can't keep on buying new Arduino and it also delays the project.
So, basically, I am trying to run 4 DC Motors ---
One 12V - 600RPM
One 12V -201 RPM(has torque gear box)
One 12V - No Info but I guess its also 600RPM
One 5V - regular motor

To connect all 4 motors, I am using Arduino shield. I am running motors in both directions.
Last time I was using 12V 1A adapter and I had connected it with the shield not Arduino, I also left the small jumper on shield connected. I am not sure what did I do wrong here that my Arduino got fried (not recognized by PC anymore).
I have new Arduino now along with n new power adapter (12V 60W) and I have 2 questions mainly.

  1. What should I do to avoid any damage to Arduino this time??
  2. Can I use 12V-60W adapter for this project??

Thanks in advance

Describe the best you can what you did before. Post pictures of the shield, part number, version,… and a diagram showing your connections

And do not throw the damaged Arduino away! Chances are only non-critical components were damaged

The only thing I could think about that might have fried bord is that I was using external 12V power and also connecting it with PC to upload code at the same time. I am not sure what version of motor driver Shield is it.
This is the diagram oh my setup

That looks like Adafruit Motor Shield V1. Look at pages 37 & 38 here: https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/downloads/pdf/adafruit-motor-shield.pdf

Hi, @vari217
Welcome to the forum.

Can you please post a copy of your circuit, a picture of a hand drawn circuit in jpg, png?
Hand drawn and photographed is perfectly acceptable.
Please include ALL hardware, power supplies, component names and pin labels.

Can you please post some pictures of your project?

Does you UNO have a metal USB socket?
If so check that it is not shorting on the bottom of the shield when you have it plugged in.

Thanks for your reply,
I have already bought new Arduino and I want to avoid any damage this time. my concern is -

  1. Can I use 12v 60w power adapter with L293D motor shield and Arduino ?
    2) Do I need to connect the jumper on L293D (as in screenshot above comment) or should I take it off ?
