I'm doing a project with an arduino mega 2560 and Have run out of digital pwm pins and I need to run a dot matrix display, I haven't figured out how to code one yet and I will be able to but that's not my question, Do most dot matrix displays require the pwm pins or will they work just by using the digital pins?

First tell us what display you propose to use?
PWM would be for dimming, What do you want to dim?
Do you mean a colour display? How many colours?

Most don't have such pins.
I only want one colour, and to display numbers 1-10 it doesn't need to dim, just display numbers
There are lots of them available, so pick one and get started. Adafruit has a good selection.

Except it is multi-colour, expensive and requires clever programming and resources.
Two of these would do nicely, using Marco's "Parola" library and only three pins to control.
