A very simple ir audio transmtter and receiver help.

I was thinking to build a very simple Ir audio transmitter and receiver for a very short range. My question is can it be done, the following is my plan:

Transmitter:

A simple amplifier circuit, this will take my iPods input and amplify it to drive an ir led (audio pulses).

Receiver:

A simple amplifier again, it would have a photo transistor as its input and would amplify it to drive a mini speaker or headphones.

Is all this possible with a simple amplifier chip and a few components?

Basically, yes.
[Depends on how "a few" is defined.]

Here's just one example, the result of a web-search for "IR audio link" --

Thanks thats even fewer than i expected.
