Arduino Mega: Timeout, handle is invalid

I am working on a 3D printer using an Arduino Mega clone attached to a RAMPS 1.4 board, running on Marlin firmware. When I try to upload the firmware (or any code, for that matter), I get the following error:

This report would have more information with
"Show verbose output during compilation"
option enabled in File -> Preferences.

I have tried changing serial ports, as well as restarting my computer and reinstalling the IDE.
Can anyone help?

The first question is if COM8 is indeed your mega?

What does device manager reveal when you connect and disconnect the board?

The device manager says that the board is connected to COM8.
