Arduino MEGA2560 burned component

Hi all,
I'm working on an autonomous vehicle with a MEGA and the Monster moto shield from sparkfun. I was trying to run the motors of my robot when suddently...a flash and some smoke on my board :cry: :sob: . The board still works and I have no idea about what I've lost in function. in the attachment you can see which part has burned. Can someone please help me find out what this piece did before the death? Do you know what could be the cause? code or hardware (the monster moto shield might have touched the USB casing with the motor pins).

Part looks like a resistor or some other small passive, and it's right next to the USB connector. Might be L1?

You say before this happened, you may have shorted a motor pin to the grounded case of the USB connector - that would make sense, because this is what connects the case of the USB connector to ground, and is probably the weakest link.
