arduino not recognized windows

Guys i just got my arduino

i connected it to my windows 7 64bit with 4gb of ram

the leds light up and as said in the tutorial the device drivers fail to install

but when i open the device manager it is not listed under Ports but under Other devices as "USB- Serial Controller" with exclamation mark.
i tried updating drivers by browse my computer for software and then i navigated it to C:\Users\Kiriti\Desktop\arduino-1.0-windows\arduino-1.0\drivers

after i press next it says windows could not find driver software for your device

please help me as i dont know what to do because i followed the steps as in getting started tutorial

guys please help me :frowning:

In the drivers folder, did you select the appropriate driver for your board (you have failed to disclose what your arduino you have)?

i have an Arduino Diecimila which is mentioned here

http://robokits.co.in/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6&products_id=319&zenid=9f34a194b9a2b2fff682a69d700bb193

windows wont let me to select the exact driver file right, it just allows me to select the folder and it searches automatically and it says driver not found!!! :frowning:

If you have a Diecimila, go to www.ftdichip.com and download the latest "VCP driver".

If that doesn't work, complain at microsoft about windows.

i downloaded the vcp chip and went to the device manager and tried to install the vcp chip but the error is the same windows could not find driver software for your device

the problem is it is not being recognized under ports as mentioned in getting started tutorial so even though the drivers are there computer dosent know the name of the device because it appears as usb serial controller but not as arduino uno or something like that

Isn't winblows great? Use linux!

If my memories are right (and that is limited to XP, never really used all the CRAP that came after it), you click on that exclamation mark thing in the device manager and manually select the driver location. Don't let winblows search anything, do it by hand ('Update driver' click, click, click... --> have disk). That works in XP just fine.

yup i did it manually, both in xp and windows 7 :frowning: dint work

Hi,
I have the same problem ( http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,84255.0.html )!
I tried the board on 3 different computers, the board worked on all these computers fine bevore. (each with windows 7)

Did you try the guide at http://arduino.cc/forum/index.php/topic,73748.0.html ?

Works here, even in a VM.

Does winblows detect the correct vendor/device id?

If your board uses the FTDI USB serial chip (you need to look at your board and verify), then in the IDE 1.0 drivers folder there is an FTDI folder with two .ini driver files. Have you tried installing these drivers (with the arduino disconnected from the pc), then rebooting? I've got an old xp machine and the FDI drivers used are copyright 2000-20006, and every thing works with no issues.

idk if it recognizes the device id ill post the screenshot here

and zoomkat i tried installing the inf files from ftdi folder while device was connected it does not work either as it says could not find driver software for ur device

and idk how to install them on windows 7 when device is disconnected!

Your "arduino" DOES NOT HAVE AN FTDI CHIP!

If that friggin' web shop had added some more info about this, we wouldn't have wasted our time with it. Dickheads! And they expect us to give support for their omission ! ? !

ok dude im sorry, what do i do now? i am new to this so im really sorry :frowning:

what do i have to do now? because windows does not install it even from \arduino-1.0\drivers\FTDI USB Drivers

what do i do??

First, I'd go to where you bought that 'thing' and see if they have drivers for download.

Well, the first thing to do is answer the questions posed to you. Does your board have an FTDI chip like in the below link? If not, you will probably need to use the drivers supplied in the 1.0 IDE drivers folder for your board (probably UNO.inf).

 thank you madworm, i really did not observe that drivers were provided (they were provided at the bottom of some text without proper highlighting)

now it is working, really thank you a lot madworm and zoomkat for helping:)

and i want to ask, is this Diecimila an old one? i mean why did it not work with normal software??? i am new so thats why asking, any disadvantages that i got this board which uses specific drivers?

It is a 'clone' - which is not forbidden per se, but has its drawbacks.

And apparently they switched to the prolific usb converter because it is cheaper.

so any disadvantages of this clone in terms of performance or functionality?
