Arduino usb not reconized anymore?

My pc doesn't reconize my arduino anymore. I had it connected true USB to my PC and when I plugged in the 12v adapter it suddenly stopt reconizing the device. It was also very hot. And with very I mean VERY hot. I already tried to reinstall the drivers but that doesn't worked. When I plug in the USB it powered the device on and the RX and TX light burns orange but nothing happens on my pc. Could the serial port been broken?

Lots of things could be wrong but it does sound like you fried it from this end.
For topics like this a schematic (even if hand drawn) is useful to those wanting to help.

If other things still work on the USB port then it is a fault on the board.
Cause is usually misuse of the power rails by the user.

It was working, then you connected external power supply, it stopped being picked up as USB device and got hot?! Board is damaged, discard it and replace it. Clones with the CH340G serial adapter instead of the 16u2 are usually more resistant to damage like this (though whatever you did, if it also made the board get hot quickly, even the clones won't hold up to that for long).

Basically anything you do that makes the board get hot will trash it (only exception being overloading the on-board regulator, which it's supposed to survive; the datasheet for the regulator describes over temperature shutdown, though we occasionally get people posting describing blowing the regulator doing that, though who knows whether they didn't also do something else wrong)

You connected an inappropriate power supply, or connected it improperly, or both.

Aww Man, You damaged your board. You need to now purchase a new one. Just don't connect the USB and External Power at the same time! Never do that again. Double check all the connections before doing anything.

The boards are (in general) designed to survive that. And I use it on a Mega without problems; although I always first connect power and next the USB. When I have some spare Megas, I will try it the other way around.

You forgot to mention which component(s) got hot.

Drivers are for the PC, not the Arduino board. So re-installing will not help if you blew up the Arduino (which one are you using?).
