Barcode Scanner

OK, so I am using an arduino in a project, in which there will be workers pouring boxes of bolts into a feeder.

I am looking for a way to implement a barcode scanner, so the worker could scan the barcode, which would switch on a light or open a lid, directing them to the correct feeder.

I'm an amateur with arduinos, but my project is very time pressured so I need to learn how to do this within 1-2 months, and have built at least a working prototype.

What is the most simple and efficient way of doing this? (Money shouldnt be a problem)
