BLE init causes instant panic and continual rebooting

Thanks - very similar or the same as my versions then. I get:

Chip is ESP32-D0WDQ6-V3 (revision v3.0)
Features: WiFi, BT, Dual Core, 240MHz, VRef calibration in efuse, Coding Scheme None
Crystal is 40MHz

In the panel at the bottom of the IDE when I upload. The difference is the Q6 and I wonder what the significance of that is, seems a bit odd as the rest is identical.

OK I did that here:

Point 1

Theres a lot of output and I don't see anything that stands out, although I probably woulden't see it even if it hit me in the face tbh!

In this capture there's only one panic but it keeps going round as per the previous capture with less verbosity in the output. But in the 'extra stuff' I don't see any mention of a problem, just seems to take the device by surprise, suddenly bang it panics.

There is sometimes a mention of stack bashing iirc but not always and the code seems OK as previously mentioned. And the phrase Guru Meditation FWIW.

Revision 1.44. That's very old.
I bought my module 5 years ago and it's reision 3.0

Oh thats interesting. Is that a hardware revision? The chip itself by the sounds of things.
Whats quite odd is that the snippet I posted earlier reports V3 and the verbose output says 1.44. Are these different things I wonder?

It would help a lot if there was a list that would give some indication of what Board Manager match the ESP32 versions thru the years.

Maybe try an even older like Ver1.xx Board Manager or just get a more recent ESP32 , that was suggested way back in this thread.

Even if you get it working there will be other compatibility issues with that board.

I would believe the verbose output, not sure what the V3 in the other output is actually refering to.

Im not sure if V1.44 had any problems but your errors do indicate it is a chip problem and not the software.

I want to duplicate what the OP did in post #22 , but after setting the Core debug level and Upload , all I see in the serial monitor is this ..( auto scroll unchecked).
Is there anything else in preferences?

Do you have verbose also set in preferences?

I put the verbose option on in the tools menu-> core debug level. Not sure if thats the same result. Also I do have another board on order although maybe another dodgy one as its not from Adafruit. Meant to order one from them today but didn't get round to it. Still it will be worth trying as it should arrive tomorrow. I would like to understand the issue though and the v1.44 thing does seem suspicious. As you say trying the very early ones might be worth it (will try that tomorrow as its late now).

No it does not, it's something completely different.

Also I do have another board on order although maybe another dodgy one as its not from Adafruit.

My board is a genuine ESP32 devkit from Espressif, at least 5 years old. Bought it from Amazon.

I installed several older versions of the esp32 library but they all had a problem with the python version I have on the computer. Bashing my head against the python version quagmire is something I particularly dislike so I am going to cut my losses and leave it there. Maybe one of the new ones will work but also I have a few ProMicro NRF52840s on their way to me which I think might be more suitable for my application anyway since the battery life looks to be better from what I can tell. So hopefully I've covered my bases, just got to wait for the post now. Thanks for the help to everyone.

Just wanted to update this, I got a couple of new boards which work perfectly so it was the hardware one way or another. I'm not sure if it was fake hardware or firmware not being up to date / otherwise incorrect.
