Broken Xbee?

Im using the SparkFun Xbee shield and the Series 1 Xbee + Arduino Uno. How do I tell if the Xbee is broken? One of them is broken, I think.

Ive been following the instructions from this site below, but when I type in the text in serial monitor while the USB Xbee explorer is attached, no output appears at all. Something is going wrong. Should the D015 LED be lighting up when Xbee is attached to Sparkfun shield? Should TX and RX buttons be linking on the USB Xbee explorer?

Its more likely a configuration issue.
I am afraid I do not know what D015 is.
