Cannot upload to my brand-new Arduino Nano

I am on Arduino software version 1.8.5. with a brand new Arduino Nano (clone), and I am getting these error messages:

Hopefully someone can help, thank you!

Select Tools > Processor > ATmega328P (Old Bootloader) from the Arduino IDE's menus and then try uploading again.

Which Processor have you got selected ?
image

I have tried that and still no luck, same error.

What exactly did you try ?

I tried with both 'ATmega328P' and 'ATmega328P (Old bootloader)' and neither worked.

OK

Apart from trying other USB leads and PC ports I have no more suggestions

Is the Nano your only Arduino ?

Does the COM1 port you are using dissapear from the selection when you unplug the Nano ?

Is it an official Nano or a Nano clone that may be using a USB-to-Serial chip that you don't have a driver for?

No, the COM1 port stays there.

It's a Nano clone, how do I find out if the USB-to-serial chip needs a driver that I don't have?

The difficult way.

  1. Open Windows devive manager, right click on the device (it probably has a yellow triangle), select properties from the context menu and note down the VID and the PID.

image
For my clone Nano in above
VID = 1A86, PID = 7523.

  1. Next look up those numbers on the web; e.g. USB\VID_1A86&PID_7523 - CH340 serial converter | Device Hunt which will tell you that it is a CH340.

  2. Now you know the manufacturer (QinHeng Electronics) and you can visit their website and search for the driver: CH341SER.ZIP - Nanjing Qinheng Microelectronics Co., Ltd.

  3. Download it and install it.

The easy way that will probably work as most clones use the CH340 chip: do step (4) above, download it from CH341SER.ZIP - Nanjing Qinheng Microelectronics Co., Ltd. and install it
