Cheap linear actuator's position sensor

Hello,
I have two linear actuators (up to 400mm) and I want to measure their position, that way I could adjust it so they would have approximate extrusion (they do not operate at exactly same speed). I have looked at industrial grade potentiometers, but they cost a LOT. Is there some easier, cheaper way? I do not want to use laser or other sophisticated way, because actuators will work outside in poor weather conditions (thus I think only analog potentiometer devices would work).

Maybe there are reel type cable cheap potentiometers?

Thank you.

String pots ("reel type") are generally not cheap.
There are many low cost linear actuators with built-in potentiometer feedback. If you want to keep the one you have, maybe something like the laser distance sensor might work.

Do you need to compare analog positions or could simpler digital sensors do the same job?  Tell more about the application.

as I mentioned - I do not want to use laser because of harsh working conditions.

Then the best suggestion I can make is to replace the actuator with one that has built-in position feedback.
