Compilation fails due to "No upload port specified"

Stemming from my post here and this comment I made I opened this Topic as a sepperate issue.

Compilation fails due to no "Upload port specified". Under the regular Arduino App ther is a option under "Tools" to specify the port. In this version that option is absent. leading to this error.

Confirms as a problem as when I use the option "Upload using Programmer" All works as expected.

There is further discussions related this topic in the same thread linked above. Apparently it is related to the Autodetecting problem of avaiable ports.

It is only absent when no ports were discovered. I have encountered a problem where it did not discover ports even though they were present, which is being tracked here:

As mentioned there, I find this issue to be intermittent, meaning that if I restart the IDE once or twice it will then show the ports. The port will also appear if I unplug and then replug the board while the IDE is running. If you try those things, do you get a port finally, or do you never get ports?

There is another report that seems to be the latter:

Thank You! Will try and play around when time allows later. I think adding back the option the set port as per the old Arduino IDE is a option as it also allows for a quick and easy testing solution whether the hardware and software system is actively communicating without compiling first.

Ok, yet strange indeed! On the old Arduino IDE it still shows the "port" option but greyed out, even if it cannot find any available ports.

Thats why I said it helps showing that the hardware is functioning even before compiling and uploading attempts.
For example in this my case the Uno is programmed direct via ISP mode using a Pickit4 and it must be considered that the Uno does not have to be plugged in as the Pickit4 could have supplied the target voltage directly.

Is this problem specific to minicore? If I flash back the arduino standard core would it make any difference?

I think that is the best behavior. It is confusing to the user for an expected menu item to be absent.
