Hi
I'm new to the Arduino family so please bear with me.
I am trying to get my Arduino Uno connected to my Lenovo laptop running Windows 10.
I downloaded the latest drivers from the Arduino.cc page
I get the attached error message when trying to update the drivers from Device Manager (DriverError.png)
I have also attached the output in my SetupAPI.dev.log file from C:\windows\inf
I cannot fathom what's up here and was hoping someone on the forum may have seen this issue.
I have not tried to connect the Uno to another computer yet as I really need it running on my laptop rather than my desktop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Ben
Update - just tried this with my desktop PC and absolutely no issues at all. As far as I am concerned, this means that there is no issue with the board itself but I am still totally confused as to why I cannot get the drivers to update on my laptop.
Which version of win 10 ?
Are you the sole owner of that laptop ? (not corporate or school etc)
Do you have full admin privileges ?
Are you using USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports ? (avoid 3,0)
What security do you have on that box in terms of AV and or similar ?
Is it a REAL or CLONE UNO ? (clones can require different drivers)
Are those drivers for the desktop IDE or CREATE ? (in theory the same package)
Hi There - thanks for the reply.
It's Windows 10 Home on the laptop.
I am the sole owner.
I am logged in as an admin user and can run the install package as administrator. When installing the drivers, however, I am doing it through device manager which I believe needs admin rights.
I'm using the USB2 port.
AV software is simply Windows Defender.
I believe that it is a REAL uno - it came in the official Arduino starter pack.
It's the drivers in the IDE installation "drivers" folder that I am trying to install.
There is a VAST difference between a "user" with "admin" rights and an "ADMINISTRATOR"
Although not normally required sometime elevated privileges my on occasion be needed.
The drivers should naturally install and the only time most people need to install from the drivers folder is for some of the older drivers in the ZIP file.
How old is the board itself as that might dictate a specific driver.
Also a picture of the chip near the USB socket would be nice.
This is the area you need to look at for a pic but yours may look different.
Hi - thanks for another reply - much appreciated
I have attached ....
- UserAccount.jpg - a picture of my user account - hopefully it's the right administrator type
- Chip.jpg - a picture of the chip
- Board.jpg - a picture of the board from the front
- BoardBack.jpg - a picture of the board from the back
I hope these help - if you need anything else then just let me know
The laptop is a Lenovo Z50 - not sure if that's relevant or not. The drivers and board work fine on my custom built desktop.
The board is probably a couple of months old - my wife got it as a present for me and I think she's hidden it for a couple of months.
Cheers,
Ben
I'm still absolutely stuck with this problem.
I tried the Zip file tonight after removing the whole Arduino installation but still got the same issue.
The board looks like a Real UNO so I doubt that is the issue unless that chip is broken somehow.
Your laptop does have a USB 3.0 port so make sure you are NOT using that.
As your also has USB 2.0 ports you should try those. In most circumstances they will work.
Should that not be the case you might have to roll back and driver updates windows has provided for your USB ports as there were some issues in that regards.
As far as re-installing I am attaching a help file for that aspect as there are considerations to take into account.
Sorry for late reply but was on a break with friends.
CLEAN UP BEFORE INSTALLING ANOTHER COPY OF THE IDE OR ARDUINO CREATE.pdf (345 KB)
Hi Again
Yeah the board should be a real UNO - it came in an official Arduino Starter Kit .
I'm using the USB port on the right hand side of the machine which has not got the blue bit in it - I believe the easy way to identify USB3 is the blue isn't it ?
I will try a driver rollback and the advice in the help file tonight and report back.
Thanks so much for the repeated help here - this laptop is being a real pain and I was on the verge of ditching it so many times since I have owned it. I may even try a full rebuild tonight as I am so fed up with it. It's slow and unhelpful and seems to be so far locked down as to be at times unusable - just like in this instance.
Ben
Just a quick note.
Some laptops ship with an option to install X86 or X64 versions of windows but often default to X86 (grrr) so if you do re-install using the stock laptop supplied image try ensure you are doing the X64 install.
Also try avoid any pre installed "bloatware" and "trial" software that comes with so many "stock" installs.
When re-installing on lappys I often use one of my non corrupted media sources and then spend time doing the drivers from the latest source to avoid any unwanted items and that also gives you the option of claiming back other partitions for maximum storage. Then its just a matter of telling windows to change the registration number to the version that was on there for activation.
A little time consuming but often worth the effort.
I have good news.
I decided that I seriously disliked the configuration of my laptop - it was full of horrible Lenovo software and was outrageously slow and locked down.
So last night I decided to bite the bullet, backup my documents and rebuild the laptop from scratch.
When I plugged my Arduino board into the laptop after the rebuild, it worked beautifully.
So I believe I had something very wrong in my installation of Windows that came when I bought the laptop.
Anyway - I am happily playing away with my Arduino board now, and as a bonus, I am liking my laptop for the first time ever.
Thank you so much for the many helpful responses during this problem that i have had - you've been fantastic.
I hope our paths cross again
Good to know you are now a happy Arduino user.
Its what we all strive for.
