ESP32 Intro Material?

Hi all! I just started this hobby of "playing" with microcontrollers. I like the esp32 and have been using a lot of development boards but it always seems there is some issue with the way the dev boards are configured. I was thinking of diving in deeper and actually using the esp32 chip and creating my own pcb rather than use a dev board. Looking at some of the schematics, it looks like some of the common features are a voltage regulator, antenna, usb header, and a couple of switches. The question I have is "what are some of the other major things I need to consider?". Is there a good source of info for beginners? For example, I have no idea as to the firmware that needs to be included or even how to program them (I am not talking about programming them with the arduino framework - I am assuming the boards come with bootloaders and other software). Appreciate any references for novices please!
