Extending distance between LED & board

To solve a packaging/positioning problem, I cut the LEDs off a little IR sensor I have and inserted a 8 inch piece of wire between the LEDs and the board. Now the sensor range has dropped to almost nothing. The sensor only triggers if the send and receive are almost touching.

Assuming it’s because of the length of the wire. Any way to over come this?

Thanks

The wire length shouldn't have any effect.

Maybe you overheated it when soldering or maybe you wired it backwards?

Probably not but I cannot see what you did but apparently you damaged something or did a cold solder joint.

Post a picture of the new hardware setup.

The connections are correct, it works - just very poor range.

I have electrical continuity between the underside of the board through both soldered joints to the leg of the LED on all 4 wires.

Soldering !

  • Sorry but you probably damaged the RX and/or TX components with your soldering.

Get a new board.

  • For this kind of modification, you should consider using two pin female headers to plug onto the RX/TX component leads.
This way the components will not be damaged from soldering.

  • A bit of UV glue on the soldered connections will reinforce them.
