Got several of the 6N137 optos. Here's the data sheet below.
The pinouts and orientation are in the packages section of the datasheet. You're just looking in the wrong place. Read the whole document.
What on earth do you mean, "it shouldn't be too technical"? Designing electronics on this level is inherently very technical. You can't talk your way out of it.
If you don't want technical, why use that device when simple optoisolators are available?
...and when simple, complete opto modules are available?

For the beginner, always be sure the dot/indent spot is on your left and is on top. That dot is always next to pin 1. Industry standard for at least 50 years.
As stated the dot is always near Pin 1.
I though page 2 of the spec would show this but it unclear in their figure. I see why you asked.
