Installing 1.6.4 on linux

Hi I'm trying to install arduino IDE 1.6.4 for ubuntu so I can complete my project. We are using an Uno for the project and for some reason the newer distribution does not work on any of the boards supplied to my class but 1.6.4. I've installed 1.6.4 on my windows desktop but will need to work on it in class on my laptop so Ill need it there. I was able to install 1.8.1 on my laptop but 1.6.4 is not supplied with an install.sh file so I'm not sure where to go from here. Thanks for any help in advance.

Open the arduino-1.6.4 folder and run the arduino shell script. Double click from the file manager or ./arduino in a terminal opened in the arduino-1.6.4 directory.

Or put a link to the shell script on your desktop, DO NOT move the script to the desktop.

thanks for your help, when I do that i'm given "line 29: java: command not found"

Maybe java is not bundled with that release. If there is no java folder in the arduino folder you will need to install a java runtime.

i have the same problem and it says :
line 29: java: command not found
what version of Java I need to install ?
its necessary for me so plz help....
